East Midlands Conference Centre was electric with anticipation last week as sports stars, nominated by sports coaches, governing bodies and individuals, gathered to see if they’d left their mark on the Sports Review Judging Panel.

The winners were presented with their awards in front of an audience of nearly 500 people who had come to celebrate the achievements of participants, administrators, coaches and officials in Nottinghamshire sport.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Regeneration, Councillor Steve Carroll said: "This evening enhances our reputation as the ‘Sporting County’ in celebrating achievements in a variety of sports across Nottinghamshire.

"The awards recognise up and coming stars as well as well-established competitors and emphasise the fact that the coaches, administrators and other people behind the scenes are equally as important as those who win the medals."

Local journalist and sports commentator Andrew James hosted the evening organised by the County Council.

Presenting awards were County Council Chairman, Coun Peter Barnes, Vice Chairman, Coun John Allin and Cabinet Member for Culture and Regeneration, Coun Steve Carroll.

They were joined by guests from professional sport including Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club’s Jason Gallian and Mick Newell.

Winners from last year including Coach of the Year, Christine Lineker and Achievement of the Year, Richard Whitehead were also on hand to congratulate this year’s winners.

Phil Beniston won the Amateur Sportsperson of the Year Award, which was collected on his behalf by his son Adam
